Cuvee

Cuvée (or Cuvee on some English language labels) is a French term used on wine labels to denote wine of a specific blend or batch. The word originates from the French word cuve meaning vat. A cuvée wine may be numbered, indicating that the winemaker assigned a unique number to that blend. The word cuvée may also be used in terms such as vin de cuvée, cuvée speciale, or tête de cuvée to indicate a first-press wine or a wine that the winemaker believes to be among their finest.

2005 Mountain Cuvee
Napa Valley

This is the wine to choose when you're looking for vivid fruit and rich, soft tannins. Mountain Cuvee is a winemaker's red blend that beautifully expresses the distinctive qualities of the traditional Bordeaux varietals. Each of the grape varieties in the cuvee contributes nuances that harmonize with the other components, resulting in a complex array of aromas and flavors. The wine displays an incredibly aromatic nose, a rich mid-palate and a lengthy finish.

Complex spice aromas and concentrated sweet fruit abound in this wine. The aromas entice with blackberry and ripe plum mingling with clove and vanilla. The mouth is alive with berries, cherries and spicy oak. Smooth and full, this approachable wine offers a long, lingering finish.

2003 Syrah, Cuvee "R"

Five different Syrah clones plus 4% Vognier give great complexity. This wine is so black it’s almost opaque. The nose has tons of cherry and wild berry fruit with notes of stone fruit, cassis and smoked bacon. The structure is classic: muscular and racy. This is not a typical fat, sweet, high alcohol California style wine, but don’t get the wrong idea – it’s not thin or tart either. This cuvee is significantly more age worthy than any Syrah we’ve made to date (the 1994 and 1995 are wonderful right now). I’d suggest pairing it with hearty fare if you drink it young. I’m going to cellar quite a few bottles and drink the EnglandCrest while I’m letting this develop.

2005 Reflection Late Harvest Cuvee
Napa Valley

Reflection is the creation of our winemaker David Yorgensen. He suggested that we pick the left over remaining bunches that our grape pickers missed (only about a ton of grapes out of 120 tons...). So we made a field blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot - yes, the same grapes that go into Seduction.

Enticing aromas of blueberry, vanilla and cedar lead into a core of intense berry fruit dominating the palate. Framed by pleasant sweetness and bright acidity, the modest tannins and ripe fruit yield to a velvety mouthfeel and lingering finish on this very small production late harvest red wine.

After more than fifteen years of development, Cain Cuvée has come of age! We have created a refreshing, vibrant cabernet blend that pleases the palate with plenty of complexity to stimulate the senses.

Cuvée is the most eclectic of our three blends – not limited to a particular varietal formula. In this release, Merlot is present in the largest proportion while, collectively, the two Cabernets make up a slight majority. Finally, a dollop of Petit Verdot completes the blend. In the NV4, the 2004 vintage contributes the core, while the 2003 vintage adds additional finesse, polish, and complexity.

1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Premiere Cuvee

To our knowledge, no other California winery is releasing a wine of this age and quality level. We are blessed with great vintages thought the nineties and this wine represents a definite peak of quality. This is a penetrating, dimensional and truly elegant wine with great structure and lovely balance. It is quite drinkable now, but will reward even further aging, possibly as much as another 10-15 years. Superb length.

2004 Cuvee Jeanne Marie
Santa Ynez Valley

Planted in 1999 by Dick and Jenny, the Williamson-Doré Vineyard is located in the eastern portion of the Santa Ynez Valley. This could actually be labeled as Grenache since it makes up 80% of the blend, but then my mom’s name wouldn’t be on the label. There are plenty of bright red-fruit (pomegranate and watermelon) notes that make it easily accessible now. Yet there is some deeper, dark “stuff” hanging around out back that will bode well for some aging.

The traditional varietals of the Rhône region, Syrah and Grenache were the inspiration. We then added to the allure by blending with our dark, opulent, old vine Petite Sirah to create the Estate Cuvée. Spicy fruit notes from the Grenache add to the nose and mouth, Syrah adds body, meat and tar aromas. The Petite Sirah contributes deep purple and red hues and a firm tannin backbone for textural length and extended aging.

2003 Cuvée PAU
Paso Robles

The 2003 J. Lohr Cuvée PAU has a saturated red-purple color with excellent hues. The nose is very reminiscent of its Bordeaux namesake, with coffee and forest floor notes combined with red currant and cherry fruit with hints of chocolate. The fruit is complemented with toasty and tarry French oak. The wine displays the full-bodied nature of Cabernet Sauvignon with rich currant fruit and mid to rear structure from both the fruit and the oak. On release, this wine will already have one year bottle age but will age well into the future. In its youth it should be enjoyed with a hearty steak, or as it ages, with beef tenderloin and rack of lamb. This wine should be allowed to breathe or decant prior to serving.

2006 Bien Nacido Cuvee

This wine is 50% and 50% Viognier. The chardonnay comes from our first pick at Bien Nacido – Y Block. Most of the viognier is from Bien Nacido, with a small percentage of viognier coming from the Vogelzang vineyard in Santa Ynez. We pick the viognier ultra-ripe (around 26° brix), which on its own would be too heavy and cloying. At that ripeness however, the viognier aromatics are amazing. We blend it with chardonnay that was picked, in the case, at 22° brix, which reigns in the alcohol (13.8% here) and gives the wine structure and acidity.
