Gewurztraminer

Sometimes referred to as Gewürz or Traminer, Gewurztraminer is a white wine grape variety that performs best in cooler climates. It is known for its spicy characteristics. The name literally means Spice Traminer, and derives from the grape being a highly aromatic variant of its parent, simply called Traminer.

Field Blend

Since we’re among friends, it’s okay to just call it “Ge-voorts”. This noble grape is well-known in Germany and Alsace, where it is produced in a range of styles from crisply dry to rich and sweet. Our Gewurztraminer has medium body with a whisper of sweetness. The 2006 vintage presents a flamboyant array of aromas, true
to the varietal. Scents of pear and lychee are accented with tones of honey, light jasmine and a sprinkling of white pepper. Sip this wine and you’re reminded of a tropical fruit salad highlighted by pear and pineapple. A characteristic spiciness adds dimension to the wine. Gewurztraminer’s exotic flavors make it a good match with Thai food and other Asian cuisines, or chicken with mango salsa. We also like it in the afternoons, paired with a rich, creamy cheese.

2002 Dry Select Gewurztraminer
Russian River Valley

Our dry style Gewurztraminer is allowed to hang on the vine about ten days longer than the off-dry Gewurz. It is produced in small lots and fermented with indigenous yeast. The wine is 100% barrel fermented in small, neutral French oak until completely dry, increasing a richness in palate and depth of body.

Floral and perfume aromas of rose petal, kiwi and vanilla are pre-dominant in the nose. Intense flavors of apricot, nectarine, ripe peach, grapefruit and clove spice are layered with deep mineral and flinty components. The wine finishes smooth with a creamy and glycerin-like viscosity on the palate.

2000 Late Harvest Gewurztraminer
Monterey County

GAN EDEN's 2000 Late Harvest Gewurztraminer is a full flavored wine exhibiting grapefruit, pear and apricot character, and the spicy floral aromas characteristic of the Gewurztraminer grape. The 9% residual sugar is well balanced by acidity, so that the overall effect is refreshing, neither cloying nor tart. This wine has a pleasant, long finish. Our Late Harvest Gewurztraminer is superb served all by itself, or excellent with a wide variety of fruity desserts. I am particularly fond of this wine with pate at the commencement of the meal, or just with fruit at the meal's end.

2006 'T-Bud Dry Cuvee' Gewurztraminer

In 2005 we took four acres of Chardonnay and grafted Gewurztraminer onto the vines here at the Husch property using the age-old T-bud technique. The vines are thriving and Husch's first crop from our T-bud block provides the structure for this special dry Gewurztraminer cuvee.

This dry Gewurztraminer has rose petal and ginger aromas complemented by fresh citrus and lychee flavors. Less than 300 cases were made of this debut wine.

Intense floral aromas of rose petal, gardenia and honeysuckle couple with the subtle perfumed spice notes of ginger and green tea. In the mouth the wine confirms its floral and spice character and shows zesty citrus and concentrated lychee-nut. The mouthfeel is crisp but hints at a broad and slightly oily texture on the mid-palate, the finish is zesty. Delight in the Husch 2006 Gewurztraminer with Asian cuisine, fresh fruit and cheeses, turkey dinner, or on a warm afternoon.

Aromas of beeswax and honeysuckle, lychee, spiced apricot, citrus rind and rose petal grace the nose. The palate highlights apricot and lychee with nuances of nutmeg and cinnamon. The mouthfeel is broad and full with lingering viscosity and balanced acidity. A hint of petrol and jalapeno play on the finish. The residual sugar is balanced with lively acidity so this wine can be enjoyed on its own or with a light dessert (try our Almond Ginger Biscotti recipe!). Husch late harvest Gewurztraminer will gain complexity and richness over the next 5-10 years.

2007 Gewurztraminer

From the glass, the nose is greeted with an amazing array of tropical fruits like mango and papaya. Also on the nose, white flower blossoms like jasmine, honeysuckle or gardenia. The combination of tropical fruit and floral seem to indicate a slightly sweet wine but with the first sip it is clear that the wine bone dry. Mango, papaya and crisp pear greet the palate. The fruit is set atop a creamy texture which comes from the fermentation and partial aging in old, French oak barrels. Combined with the fruit are distinct spice elements like clove or pumpkin pie, a trademark of this varietal. One of the ultimate food wines, Gewurztraminer will pair with a range of food from light, Asian cuisine to traditional Thanksgiving day foods like turkey and stuffing.

Our Gewurztraminer has become one of the signature wines of Thomas Fogarty Winery. Our influences at roshambo stray from the mainstream. We often find ourselves drawing inspiration from the great, but sometimes forgotten, artisans of the ages. Like our hero Edward Gorey, who made grisly fun again, or like the wine makers of Alsace that remind us that Gewurztraminer is at its most mind-blowing, most breathtaking, and downright sexiest when it’s not cloyingly sweet, but dry. Our dry Gewurztraminer is rich with aromas of meyer lemon, honeysuckle, and lychee but finishes crisp, clean, and refreshing. Vive la difference!

2006 Gewürztraminer
Russian River Valley

We have sourced the grapes for our Gewürztraminer from the same vineyard in the Russian River Valley AVA for over twenty years. The gentle sloping terrain on the vineyards allows for good soil drainage and healthy vines that produce concentrated grapes with intense varietal character. We harvested the grapes for this wine on September 18 and 21, 2006.

Our 2006 Gewürztraminer exhibits the typical varietal aromas of rose petal and lychee. These floral, perfumed aromas are balanced with zesty tangerine peel and grapefruit on the nose. A long, slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks ensures that the wine retains these bright aromatics. A soft mouthfeel and balanced citrus flavors of lemon and grapefruit lead to a clean finish.

2004 Corazón Gewürztraminer
Anderson Valley

Each year I produce a small lot of Gewürztraminer from a 30-year-old vineyard in the Anderson Valley, which is clearly the best area in California for the variety. Inspired by Alsatian wines, the Corazon is fermented to dryness. Made this way, Gewürztraminer cries out for food.

The 2004 is my favorite Corazón Gewürztraminer to date. Budbreak was early in 2004 and the rest of the season continued apace, resulting in the earliest harvest in anyone's memory. The ripening season was very even, with no extreme heat spikes, yielding grapes of uncommon intensity. Complex aromas include pear, honeysuckle, honeycomb, wildflowers, lychee, grapefruit zest and chamomile. The flavors are rich with citron and vanilla flavors and subtle spice notes. Creamy and full in the mouth, it has a long crisp finish.

2005 Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer comes in several styles, and all are increasingly popular. Our Valley Oaks style is made with a traditional taste profile, just a bit sweet but oh so perfect at holiday or any time you need a wine to complement a meal. Crisp acidity is a hallmark of this wine. Grapes are sourced from cool-climate regions of California (hot weather just won’t do for this varietal) and we treat the grapes to a slow, cold fermentation averaging 50° in nothing but stainless steel tanks. The absence of oak is purposeful.
