Malbec

Malbec is a black, mellow grape variety originally grown in France, in the Loire Valley and Cahors. Long known as one of the six grapes used in the blending of red Bordeaux wine, it is increasingly celebrated as an Argentine varietal wine. It is also grown on Long Island New York and in the cooler regions of California. It has an extensive listing of synonyms, currently more than two hundred.

Visually stunning with incredibly deep purple and crimson, so dark it is remeniscent of the "Black wines of the Cahors". Soft, ripe fruit aromas of blackberry jam offset with delicate hints of rose petal and eucalyptus. A dark berry concentration luxuriates on the palate, with blackberry, cherry compote and boysenberry that are juicy and satisfying. Smooth and silky tannins support a long, deep and persistent finish that is simultaneously balanced and intense. Serve with a classic "Steak au Poivre" and take your senses to a whole other level of enjoyment.

The 2005 Ladera Malbec is as bold as it is suave. With its inky dark color and rich aromatics, it is undeniably masculine yet approachable and youthful. The aromas are fruit forward with hints of Bing cherry, peppered meats and smoky fig. The entry is hearty and weighty with soft wet tannins that round out the mid palate and carry through to the finish. The silky tannins also allow for drinking earlier than other Bordeaux varietals.

2003 Malbec, Diamond Ridge
Lake County

Grown atop the Diamond Ridge, the grapes for this Malbec were hand-selected with great care. These very fragile and thin-skinned grapes require a lot of sun and heat. The result is a very big wine with intense flavors of plum, pepper and coffee. Would pair nicely with steak or other red meats.

The ripe, juicy aromas of currants and cherries are what you first notice about Christine Andrew 2004 Malbec.

Malbec is one of the traditional Bordeaux varietals flourishing in Lodi. The areas Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers amid rich fertile soil create an ideal environment for growing Malbec. These grapes have similar characteristics to that of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and are often times rich but delicate.

Malbec tends to be best paired with any red meat dish but can also go great with Mexican, Indian or Italian fare.
