Marsanne

Marsanne is a little used variety of grape, most common in the northern Rhône, where it is often blended with Roussanne. It is also grown in Switzerland where its name has the synonym Ermitage Blanc, and the Goulburn Valley region of Australia. The Australian varieties often require unusually long bottle aging compared to most white wines.

The wines created from Marsanne are rich and nutty, with hints of spice and pear. Often Australian Marsanne has aromas of melon and honeysuckle.

In California, Marsanne is often found blended with Roussanne, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc. In wines based on the richer Roussanne or the more floral Viognier Marsanne is prized for its reflection of minerality.

For many years the variety was kept alive by the Tahbilk Winery in the Goulburn Valley but over recent times Marsanne has become much more popular throughout Australian wine regions.

2006 Marsanne
Sonoma Valley Estate

This 2006 Marsanne is fruitier than the 2005, with aromas reminiscent of orange, tangerine and apricot, along with notes of almond and pepper. A moderately rich entry is followed by a full viscous mid-palate dominated by orange-tangerine flavors. The hint of tannin in the finish promises further evolution and age-worthiness.

2006 Marsanne
Santa Ynez Valley

Marsanne is one of two Rhone varietals grown in the Buttonwood Farm vineyard. While interest in all of the Rhone varietals is increasing, Buttonwood remains one of the few California wineries to produce this unique white wine. 2006 Marsanne is a delicate beauty. Subtle flavors of fig, pear and spice tease the taste buds while the light body and pleasantly tart finish make it a fine accompaniment with many first course dishes.

Serve Marsanne with butternut squash soup drizzled with cream and sprinkled with ground cumin.

2005 Marsanne Roussanne
Sonoma County

Marsanne and Roussanne are the Northern Rhone Valley’s two most important white wine grape varieties and are regularly blended together. There are under 250 combined acres of these grapes in California making them a bit of a rarity.

This blend of Marsanne and Roussanne has a zesty orange character mixed with grapefruit and a wonderful mineral character. We did not expose the wine to oak aging allowing the wine to remain fresh and lively.
