2001 Meritage
Sonoma Coast

The high altitude, steep slope and rocky, well-drained soil on top of Sonoma Mountain work together to create the distinctive terroir of our Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in this classic Bordeaux blend. These conditions produce a low yield per acre with fewer bunches, smaller clusters and tiny berries. Once again proving that less is more, the result is a greater concentration of flavors—rich, ripe black cherry and soft tannins balanced by traditional French oak. This complex Meritage opens up beautifully in the glass and will age well in the bottle. Vintage 2001 44% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot.

2003 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Blend "Miradero"
Sonoma Valley

With the release of this 2003 vintage, Miradero has evolved from the Merlot dominated model of the legendary 2001 (voted Best California Merlot-CA State Fair) to a more “Medoc” style wine with a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. This classic Bordeaux blend combines the best of both old world and new. With a hefty 36% Merlot component, Miradero owes as much to the traditions and heritage of the Right Bank, such as St. Emilion, as it does to the more Cabernet-centric Left Bank but the rich black fruit and ripe, plush tannins speak of the climate and terroir of Sonoma.

The wine opens invitingly with a deep ruby color and aromas of summer blackberries with hints of vanillin and dark roasted espresso beans. Ample body in the mouth is supported by fine-grained, well integrated tannins while the flavors follow through with a dark fruit, black cherry and berry theme accented by notes of bittersweet cocoa and sweet spice and a long, lingering, harmonious finish.

While the fruit-forward ripeness and well-filled texture of this wine might lead to enjoyment this very evening, the richness and refined tannin structure would allow an additional 5-7 years of evolution in the

2003 Anthem Meritage
Sonoma Valley

Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc from the Robert Hunter Vineyard in the heart of the Sonoma Valley are the traditional backbone of our Anthem blend, and comprised 87% of our 2003 Anthem blend. Each year, these grapes are first blended and then fermented, pressed and aged in French oak barrels together to allow their complex, intense flavors to marry. After two years in oak, we blend in a small amount of the very best wines from the vintage to complete this unique proprietary blend. We selected 5.75% Merlot, 4.25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, all from the McCoy vineyard, as our finishing wines for this year’s blend. Our Anthem is a unique twist on the traditional Cabernet Sauvignon- and Merlot-based Meritage blend, presenting instead the spicy tobacco and cedar notes that are typical of Petit Verdot and the exotic perfume and juicy, luscious mouthfeel of Malbec. A vibrant and eloquent offering, this wine truly lives up to its name, Anthem.

2005 Miser Meritage

“Miser” was conceived as a traditional Bordeaux blend, a more serious and thoughtful cousin to our popular and muscular California Cabernet Sauvignon. Here we sought a satisfying depth of flavor by marrying the firm tannins and forward fruit of Gary Mangels’ superb Suisun Valley Cab Sauv with the chocolate undertones of Lange Vineyard and the spicy, minerally Haynes Valley component, then framing the lush richness of the resulting Cabernet Sauvignon blend with the energetic drive and refinement of Cabernet Franc from the Lodi appellation. This Cabernet Franc also imparts intriguing notes of tobacco and tarragon to the nose and a lingering finish reminiscent of fine Grapes, so we elected to utilize a substantial portion. It’s also cheaper!
