Pinot Grigio

The Pinot gris from California is often called Pinot grigio because of its similarity in style to the wine of Italy. There are about 1,620 acres planted in the Central and South coastal areas of California.

2007 Pinot Grigio

Donati Family Vineyard Pinot Grigio was crafted in the style of the finest Northern Italian whites. This choice of style reflects the fact that cooling afternoon breezes flowing through our high-elevation vineyard site at the crest of the Paicines Hills provide balanced acidity to our grapes.

One of the most popular of our white wine releases, we are happy to again make available this lovely Pinot Grigio. Pinot Grigio is thought to be a gray-skinned mutation of the dark-skinned Pinot Noir. It is a popular grape variety commonly found in our family’s ancestral home of Northern Italy—especially in Alto-Adige, Veneto and Friuli. The grape is also grown in France where it is commonly known as Pinot Gris.

WINEMAKERS NOTES:
The 2007 vintage was produced from Pinot Grigio grapes grown in the Clarksburg region of the Sacramento River Delta. This wine opens on the nose with opulent citrus/stone fruit aromas reminiscent of grapefruit and peach—with hints of lichee nut, green apple and vanilla. On the palate the wine has a distinctive mineral essence with background notes of toasted almond all wrapped in a clean, austere finish. This nicely balanced wine is a perfect complement for seafood or pasta with white sauces. The 2007 vintage yielded approximately 1,250 cases.

2005 Pinot Grigio
Santa Barbara County

Pinot Grigio is an Italian variety, primarily produced in the Friuli and Alto Adige regions north of Venice and in other parts of northeast Italy. Like other popular Italian white wines, it is light in color and flavor. Although we think of Pinot Grigio as a white wine, the skins of this grape are actually copper, or salmon, colored, and despite the fact that the juice is pressed off the skins immediately, a small amount of “pinkish” color manages to end up in the wine. If the wine is not fined a very slight shade of color can appear in the finished wine, although this is rarely visible in the bottle or glass. In the 2005 vintage, despite our best efforts at fining and filtering, some of that slight red color still remains, reminding us that Pinot Grigio is not really a white grape after all. This barrel aged version of our Pinot Grigio is the style we have come to prefer over the crispier stainless steel only version. However, it is intriguing to experience the effect the oak has on this variety. While barrel aging creates more creaminess and smoothness, including a really great rich finish, the exceptional fruit of these grapes still shines through. Pinot Grigio is meant to drink

2005 Pinot Grigio
Paso Robles

The fruit for this wine comes from a single west side Paso Robles vineyard. When we first tasted the fruit at crush, we decided to try a different presentation than is normal for this varietal. Instead of cold settling and aging in stainless steel, we decided to ferment and age in oak. Two yeasts were used in combination and were chosen to highlight the stone fruit and tropical aromas and a full mouth feel. After crush and press, the wine was barrel fermented and underwent partial malolactic fermentation. It was aged over nine months in oak before bottling.

2005 Pinot Grigio

Adhering to varietal correctness is a byword for many winemakers. We strive for it as well, but we’re not above making improvements. The Italian Pinot Grigio craze has spawned a California following, said Wine Discoveries, and the front of the Pinot Grigio parade starts right here. Our PG is perhaps richer, perhaps fruitier than some styles, but you’ll recognize the high acidity and balanced crispness that make this wine a wonderful summer sipper. But don’t wait for hot weather: drink what you like, when you like to drink it. A slow, cool fermentation in stainless makes it all possible.
